Press release
For her first solo show at Galerie Maubert, Sylvie Fanchon has a simple plan: say it all. Say it all in few words, in few gestures and in a few colors, or, at least, say what is essential : “GLORY”, “THE PURPOSEOFARTISBUSINESS”, “CASH”, “SYLVIEFANCHON.COM”. To say it several times, in capital letters, without space, in English the-language-of-communication-and-international-trade, is to speak loudly and in one go, without breathing. It means saying important things, it means saying something like: “I”, or rather “Me, artist”, and even “I want to be seen”, and even more “...recognized, supported, discussed, bought", "to be in the business".

Using a simple technique and the two-color scheme that form the basis of her style, Sylvie Fanchon wraps the two floors of the Galerie Maubert with two long murals: 7 meters of blue lines on a red background on the ground floor, 19 meters of yellow lines on a black background in the basement. Here, the situation becomes more complicated by at least one notch: these long murals with contrasting colours become the backgrounds on which recent paintings are hung. We will experience an optical slide punctuated by a few visual clashes; we may see memories of landscapes streaked by speed, scrolling past under the weary gaze of our bodies wedged in the back of a car and sometimes lingering on this or that image. This is precisely what Sylvie Fanchon's painting does: a pause in the gaze.
